What is your purpose?

Theme: Knowing who we are.
Text: Jeremiah 1:4-10 NASB
Now the word of the L ord came to me saying, “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, And before you were born I consecrated you; I have appointed you a prophet to the nations.” Then I said, “Alas, Lord G od ! Behold, I do not know how to speak, Because I am a youth.” But the L ord said to me, “Do not say, ‘I am a youth,’ Because everywhere I send you, you shall go, And all that I command you, you shall speak. “Do not be afraid of them, For I am with you to deliver you,” declares the L ord . Then the L ord stretched out His hand and touched my mouth, and the L ord said to me, “Behold, I have put My words in your mouth. “See, I have appointed you this day over the nations and over the kingdoms, To pluck up and to break down, To destroy and to overthrow, To build and to plant.”

Introduction: what do you know about humanity? Who are we, why are we here? These are the questions we need to ask ourselves, and get the answer for.

Proposition: To show everyone what the word of God, says about who we are.

Main Points:
1. We are the divine plan of God. Genesis 1:26-27 NASB
Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; and let them rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over the cattle and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.
   * To be in His image

   * To be in His likeness

2. We are chosen by God.
    * According to His purpose. Romans 8:28-30 NASB
And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose. For those whom He foreknew, He also predestined to become conformed to the image of His Son, so that He would be the firstborn among many brethren; and these whom He predestined, He also called; and these whom He called, He also justified; and these whom He justified, He also glorified.

    * According to His choice. Romans 9:10-13 NASB
And not only this, but there was Rebekah also, when she had conceived twins by one man, our father Isaac; for though the twins were not yet born and had not done anything good or bad, so that God’s purpose according to His choice would stand, not because of works but because of Him who calls, it was said to her, “T he older will serve  the younger .” Just as it is written, “J acob I loved, but E sau I hated .”

    * According to His will. Ephesians 1:3-6 NASB
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we would be holy and blameless before Him. In love He predestined us to adoption as sons through Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the kind intention of His will, to the praise of the glory of His grace, which He freely bestowed on us in the Beloved.

  5. Good theme. Thanks for sharing. I find that knowing who we are is very important. It is easy to allow something other than God to define us. Our careers, our relationships, our possessions, etc. I’ve found the true identity to be the soul and there is no replacement. It’s funny how much the soul resembles the story of Jesus Christ. Born pure of a virgin, miraculous in its ability to heal unconscious psychological illnesses like lack of self-worth, long buried and forgotten as the cornerstone the builders rejected, yet it still lives. Perhaps there is a higher meaning to the story of Jesus Christ that has been lost through the centuries and distorted to mean something other than we are one with God because of the soul.
